Civic republicanism and Victorian character
In his Whigs and Liberals, John Burrow draws some analogies between 18th century neo-Harringtonism and the Victorian idea of character. Key to this the notion of masculinity that lies implicit in the concept of virtue. The 18thc Country Party militia member, armed, owning landed property segues into the Henleyesque imperialist.
